Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday sharply attacked the Indian National Congress after the party joined hands with Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government in Tamil Nadu following the Assembly election results.

Congress had fought the elections alongside Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. However, after the results, the party extended support to Vijay's TVK government. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was also present during Vijay's swearing-in ceremony on Sunday.

At the same time, Modi congratulated Vijay after he took oath as Chief Minister.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister wrote, "Congratulations to Thiru C. Joseph Vijay upon assuming the office of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Best wishes for his tenure to be an outstanding one. The Central Government will continue to work in partnership with the Tamil Nadu Government to improve the lives of the people."

Soon after congratulating Vijay, Modi launched a political attack on Congress over its decision to distance itself from the DMK.

The Prime Minister alleged that Congress had abandoned a long-time ally for political convenience.

Modi said, "The Congress government at the Centre survived for years mainly because of DMK's support. But when the political situation changed, Congress chose to walk away from the very party that stood beside it during difficult times."

He further claimed that Congress now depends heavily on regional parties to maintain political relevance.

The Prime Minister also accused the party of "betraying allies whenever politically beneficial."

DMK-Congress ties under strain

Political tension between the DMK and Congress became more visible after Kanimozhi, DMK MP and Stalin's sister, reportedly wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker requesting separate seating arrangements for her party from Congress members.

The development has triggered fresh political debate in Parliament circles. Several political observers believe the split between the two parties could weaken opposition coordination in the Lok Sabha in the coming months.

The latest developments have also drawn comparisons with 2014, when the DMK had snapped ties with Congress before the Lok Sabha elections. This time, however, Congress has moved away from the DMK after the Assembly polls and extended support to Vijay's newly formed government.
