Former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah has resigned from the party, just months ahead of the assembly elections in the state, PTI reported. Borah has reportedly sent his resignation letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

Borah has claimed that he was being 'ignored' by the party leadership and that he was not being given due place in the organization. The Congress leader's resignation comes just months before the state is due to host its assembly elections, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeking another term in office, while the Congress relies heavily on Gaurav Gogoi and the young cabal for a return to power.

'I am worried about the future of the party'

Bhupen Borah said in Guwahati that he sent his letter to the party president at 8 in the morning on Monday. He said that the reasons behind his resignation are listed in the letter in detail, PTI reported.

Borah said, "I don't want to say anything more than this. I will invite mediapersons at an appropriate time and give all the details. I don't hide anything and will not take any step in secrecy."

"I have served the Congress for 32 years, and I am worried about the future of the party. I have explained in detail about my reasons in the resignation letter sent to the party high command," he added.

Is Bhupen Borah joining any other party?

When Borah was questioned whether he would be joining any other party, he clarified that he hasn't received any offers as of now. He said, "There has been no formal proposal from any political party, but it is a fact that I have not taken the decision to resign to bid farewell to politics."

Bhupen Kumar Borah served as the President of Assam Congress from 2021 to 2025. He was replaced by MP Gaurav Gogoi in 2025. Borah was twice elected as an MLA in the state.

Gaurav Gogoi has clarified that the Congress will contest 100 of the 126 seats in Assam. The remaining seats will be reserved for allies.
