As global attention remains fixed on the escalating conflict involving Iran and the United States, India is continuing to advance its defence capabilities. One such development is the Sheshnaag-150 drone, a long-range swarming attack system designed to enhance battlefield effectiveness. Apart from its military role, the drone has also drawn interest for its unusual launch arrangement, a Toyota Hilux pickup truck used as a mobile platform.

A mobile launch system

The Sheshnaag-150 has been developed by Bengaluru-based Newspace Research Technologies (NRT). The system relies on the Hilux pickup truck as its mobile launch base, allowing the drone to be deployed quickly across different terrains.

The use of the Hilux platform is considered practical due to the vehicle's durability and off-road capability. Known for handling tough environments, the pickup provides a stable and flexible launch setup for the drone system.

Engineers at NRT have integrated the vehicle with the drone's operational systems, turning it into a practical "launchpad" capable of supporting swarm coordination and rapid deployment in varied environments.

Capabilities of the Sheshnaag-150

The Sheshnaag-150 is designed for precision strike missions and can operate over long distances. It reportedly has a range of more than 1,000 kilometre and an endurance exceeding five hours, allowing it to stay above target areas for extended periods.

The drone is capable of recognising, tracking and engaging enemy targets autonomously with minimal human intervention. It can also carry warheads weighing between 25 and 40 kilogram, making it suitable for targeted strike operations.

The Toyota Hilux platform

The Toyota Hilux, produced by the Japanese automotive giant Toyota, first appeared in 1968 and is now in its eighth generation. Over the years, the pickup has built a strong reputation for durability and reliability.

Several demonstrations and viral videos have highlighted its rugged build, with many referring to the vehicle as "indestructible".

In India, the Hilux is currently priced between Rs 28.02 lakh and Rs 35.37 lakh (ex-showroom). It is powered by a 2.8-litre in-line four-cylinder diesel engine producing 206 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The vehicle comes with a 4x4 system, paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic transmission, enabling it to navigate challenging terrain while supporting specialised military applications.
