US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in India on Saturday for a four-day visit focused on strengthening ties between New Delhi and Washington. The visit is expected to cover key issues including trade, defence, energy security and cooperation under the Quad alliance.
Rubio landed in Kolkata on his first official trip to India since taking office. Rubio’s arrival also ends a 14-year gap since a serving US secretary of state last visited Kolkata, making him the first to do so since Hillary Clinton travelled to the city in May 2012. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor welcomed him on arrival and shared details of the upcoming engagements.
“Honored to welcome my friend [Rubio] to India,” Gor wrote on X.

“We have an ambitious agenda ahead, including the Quad Foreign Ministers Meeting, focused on advancing [US President’s] vision for an even stronger US-India partnership. Looking forward to great conversations and making real progress together!” Gor said in another post.
Before leaving for India, Rubio described the visit as important for bilateral ties. “There’s a lot to work on with India, they’re a great ally and partner. We do a lot of good work with them so this is an important trip,” he said.

What’s on Rubio’s agenda?
Rubio’s visit comes at a sensitive time in India-US relations, especially after recent friction linked to tariff measures on Indian exports imposed by the United States.
Discussions during the visit are expected to focus on Indo-Pacific cooperation, supply-chain resilience, critical technologies and defence partnerships involving the Quad nations: India, the US, Japan and Australia.
Energy security is also expected to be a major talking point, particularly as India continues importing discounted Russian oil while the US pushes for higher LNG and crude exports to India.
Officials are also likely to discuss semiconductor cooperation, artificial intelligence, batteries, critical minerals and joint defence production. India currently operates several American defence platforms, including Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft, MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, M777 howitzers and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft.
