The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Saturday issued an advisory urging people not to store petrol or diesel in loose or unsuitable containers, while assuring that fuel supplies across the country remain sufficient.

The advisory comes at a time when concerns have been circulating about possible fuel shortages due to rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the ministry said, “Petrol and diesel are adequately available at retail outlets across the country. Consumers are advised not to take or store fuel in loose or inappropriate containers, as it poses serious safety risks."

Officials said the advisory followed the detection of a violation at a petrol pump in Tamil Nadu, where fuel was reportedly being dispensed into a loose container, which goes against established safety guidelines.

“It has come to notice that at one retail outlet in Tamil Nadu, petrol was being taken in a loose container, which is unsafe and not advisable," the ministry said.

Authorities stated that the petrol pump involved has been suspended for violating safety regulations, and action has already been taken against the operators. The ministry also emphasised that all fuel retailers have been instructed to strictly follow safety protocols while dispensing petrol and diesel.

“All retail outlets and dealers have been instructed to strictly follow safety guidelines while dispensing fuel. Any violation will invite strict action," the advisory stated further.
