Singer Silajit Majumder has alleged that he faced humiliation from police personnel while performing at the book fair premises in Central Park on Friday night. A video of the moment has since gone viral on social media, showing the singer expressing his anger while still on stage.
According to Silajit, the programme began around 9:30 PM and was scheduled to continue until 11 PM. Speaking to Ei Samay, the singer said he had stopped performing slightly before the scheduled closing time. Silajit claimed that around 10:50 PM, while he was performing the song “Sarbonash”, a police officer arrived at the venue and began making gestures asking him to leave the stage.

Recalling the moment, the singer said, “While singing, I saw from the stage that a police car came and stopped. An officer got out of the car, came forward and made ugly gestures telling me to get off the stage. What kind of behaviour is this? He could have waited until the song finished. Then he could have said something. You tolerate even louder sounds than this.”
Despite the incident, Silajit said he continued performing so that the audience’s experience would not be affected. However, once the song ended, he addressed the officer from the stage.
“I have been singing for 32 years. I have a sense of time. Besides, it's not 11 PM yet. You cannot tell me like this,” he said.
The singer expressed disappointment over the alleged behaviour and questioned why artists often face such treatment during performances.
“Art and culture keep us alive. And artists are repeatedly targeted. Are we worthless?” Silajit said.
