Delhi crossed 7,000 MW of electricity demand for the first time ever in April. The peak reading of 7,078 MW was recorded at 3:30 pm on Monday, according to official data.
Earlier, the 7,000 MW mark was first crossed on May 18, 2024. This year, it happened about three weeks earlier. Officials say early heat increased use of ACs, coolers, and fridges. Delhi discoms said they met Monday’s power demand.
Historical demand records
Hindustan Times cited State Load Dispatch Centre data, the 7,000 MW mark first breached in Delhi in 2018 when the city recorded 7,016 MW on July 10. It breached on June 12 in 2019. In the pandemic year of 2020, peak demand reached only 6,314 MW, so the threshold was not crossed. It breached again on July 9 in 2021, June 29 in 2022, and June 18 in 2023. In 2024, the threshold crossed on May 18, and on May 19 in 2025.

Per HT, a Tata Power DDL spokesperson said the discom successfully met a peak power demand of 2,030 MW in north and northwest Delhi. The company expects peak power load to reach 2,622 MW this summer and has made arrangements of up to 2,900 MW to meet anticipated demand. NDMC areas recorded 388 MW, while Military Engineer Services met 45 MW in cantonment areas.
What lies ahead
Officials expect Delhi's peak demand to exceed 9,000 MW for the first time this year.
Per HT, an official stated, "The expected peak power demand of over 9,000 MW represents an increase of over 300% over the peak power demand of 2,879 MW in 2002." The same official added that based on current trends, demand is projected to cross 10,000 MW by around 2028 or 2029, depending on weather conditions and demand growth.
Officials said heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense. Peak power demand may come earlier in the season. Demand could also cross previous records in the coming months.
