A 31-year-old man accused of stabbing two security guards in Mumbai is being investigated for what officials describe as a possible "lone wolf" terror attack. The probe is being led by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad, which uncovered handwritten notes during a raid at the accused's residence.
The accused, identified as Zaib Zuber Ansari, allegedly expressed his intent to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. According to investigators, the notes described the attack as his "first step" towards becoming part of a terrorist organisation. Sources also said that references to 'jihad' and 'Gaza' were found in his writings.

Background of the accused
Officials said Ansari is a science graduate who had spent several years in the United States. After reportedly being unable to secure a job there, he returned to India in 2019. He was living alone in Mira Road, where he conducted online chemistry coaching classes, per NDTV.
Investigators believe that during this period of isolation, he may have been radicalised through online content. Agencies are now examining his phone and laptop to trace digital activity and check for any links to handlers outside India.
Details of the attack
The incident took place on Monday morning in the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road, near an under-construction building. Police said the accused approached two guards on duty, initially asking for directions.
Eyewitnesses told investigators that he later returned and asked the guards about their religion. Ansari also allegedly forced one of them to recite a Kalma or Kalima. When the guard was unable to do so, he attacked both men with a sharp-edged weapon.
Victims and arrest
The injured guards, Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Ramesh Sen, were rushed to hospital and are currently undergoing treatment. Mishra remains in critical condition.
