For the first time in the capital city of the US, an Indian-origin cybersecurity expert named Rini Sampath has announced her candidacy to contest the race for the office of mayor, making her the first South Asian candidate to contest for the city’s top post.

Born in the city of Theni, Tamil Nadu, Sampath is 31 years old. At the age of seven, she migrated to the US. For more than a decade now, she has been living in Washington, DC, where she works as a government contractor.

Campaign centred on ‘fixing the basics’

Running as a member of the Democratic Party, Sampath has built her campaign around the theme “Fix the Basics,” focusing on everyday civic issues that she argues have been neglected.

Her agenda includes improving affordable housing access, lowering rents, and addressing infrastructure concerns such as potholes and damaged sidewalks. She has also called for faster emergency response times for 911 and 311 services, expansion of access to fresh food through support for local grocery operators, and redesigning streets to prioritise pedestrians and public transport.

“As mayor, my priority will be to make sure our city lives up to its basic commitments,” Sampath said in her campaign statement, emphasising accountability in governance.

Her suggestions also apply to education and social services such as improved infrastructure within schools, adequate staffing, dependable transportation, and greater access to mental health facilities.

Immigration and economic platform

Regarding her position on immigration, Sampath is known for her tough stand against what she calls fear-mongering immigration enforcement policies. This is because Sampath claims she will refuse to cooperate with federal immigration raids through local authorities.

Her campaign also highlights the need for affordable childcare and reducing tax burdens on residents and small businesses. Speaking on social media, Sampath described herself as a “proud immigrant” committed to ensuring that the “American Dream” remains accessible to all residents of the city.

A crowded race ahead

Sampath joins a competitive field that includes Janeese Lewis George, Kenyan McDuffie, Gary Goodweather, Robert L. Gross and Rhonda Hamilton.

She has also drawn support from community groups, including the American Hindu Coalition, which recently hosted an event in her support, according to PTI.

The primary election is scheduled for June 16, followed by the general election on November 3.
