The controversy unfolded on April 3, 2026, during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the iconic Eden Gardens. The match witnessed a tense moment when Abhishek Sharma was adjudged out following a contentious decision that went to the TV umpire.

The incident occurred during SRH’s innings when Abhishek, after being given out, appeared visibly frustrated. He reportedly expressed dissent by lingering at the crease and reacting to the umpire’s call, signalling disagreement with the decision. The moment quickly drew attention from commentators and match officials, as such conduct falls under strict IPL behavioural regulations.

Breach of IPL code of conduct

Following the match, the IPL governing body confirmed that Abhishek Sharma had committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.3 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision. As per official IPL guidelines, such behaviour is taken seriously to maintain discipline and respect for match officials.

Penalty imposed and official attribution

In an official statement released by the IPL after the match on April 3, it was confirmed that -“Abhishek Sharma has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.”
