Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are dealing with growing uncertainty over the availability of their talismanic leader, MS Dhoni, ahead of a crucial IPL 2026 phase. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter remains sidelined with a calf injury, and despite visible progress in training, there is still no clarity on his return. As anticipation builds around the marquee clash against the Mumbai Indians, Dhoni’s absence continues to dominate the narrative.

Injury setback delays comeback hopes

Dhoni’s troubles began just before the start of the IPL 2026 season when he picked up a calf strain, ruling him out of the opening matches. Initially, the injury was not considered serious, and it was expected that he would return early in the tournament. However, his recovery has not gone as planned.

Reports suggest that the 44-year-old suffered a setback during rehabilitation, which has pushed his comeback timeline further. Hussey, the batting coach of Chennai Super Kings, explained, “He’s been working on his running speeds, which was probably the main concern. From a skill perspective, we’re very confident in his batting and wicketkeeping. It was more about ensuring he can maintain good running power, especially towards the back end of an innings where quick singles and twos are crucial.”

“Once he feels confident in his calf, I’m sure he’ll give the signal that he’s ready to go. At the moment, we’re guided by him. We’re waiting. I think all of Chennai is waiting." He added.

CSK adopts a cautious approach ahead of MI clash

Despite being unavailable for selection, Dhoni has stayed closely involved with the squad. He has been attending practice sessions, participating in light wicketkeeping drills, and gradually building match fitness. These glimpses have offered optimism, but the team management remains firm on not rushing him back.

Head coach Stephen Fleming and the CSK support staff are prioritising long-term fitness over short-term gains. Wicketkeeping for 20 overs, combined with batting responsibilities, places considerable strain on the calf, making a full recovery essential before returning to competitive action.

With no confirmed return date, the high-voltage CSK vs MI clash could proceed without one of IPL’s most iconic figures. For fans and the franchise alike, the wait continues, with hope hinging on Dhoni regaining full fitness in the coming days.
