Singer Ed Sheeran has come out to reveal that he has been struggling with a viral disease referred to as shingles. In a post to his fans on social media, Sheeran shared that he had had the disease for over a month and he was getting better.

The news about Sheeran's illness has sparked attention once again on shingles, a viral infection that affects mostly people above a certain age but has recently been experienced by young adults too.

What causes shingles and how it happens

Shingles is a medical condition caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus. The virus that causes shingles is the same one that causes chickenpox, the Varicella Zoster Virus.

It is explained by the World Health Organization that almost all adults have the virus lying dormant in their body cells, which makes it possible to develop shingles many years after contracting chickenpox.

Although it is not normally fatal, shingles can cause great pain and even complications like vision loss or nerve pain.

Symptoms often start before the rash

Shingles does not begin with a visible rash. Early signs may include:

Burning or tingling pain on one side of the body

Sensitivity to touch

Fever and fatigue

Within a few days, a rash develops, typically forming fluid-filled blisters along a nerve pathway. These blisters usually crust over within a week to 10 days.

Who is at risk and why younger people aren’t immune

While shingles predominantly affects patients above the age of 50, younger individuals are also vulnerable under particular circumstances. Some of these include:

Aging and immune deficiency

Existing medical complications like diabetes or cancer

Stress and exhaustion

Taking medicines that suppress the body’s immunity

It is noted by doctors that increasing levels of stress and health problems due to lifestyles might be reasons behind this trend.

Treatment and prevention

Immediate treatment is vital. Antiviral drugs, administered within 72 hours after the outbreak of the rash, will lead to faster recovery and decrease its intensity.

The public health organization, such as CDC, advises immunization, specifically individuals over 50 years or those with compromised immunity. Good health practices, like sufficient sleep, stress control, and chronic illness management, may also help prevent the virus’s activation.

Reasons behind increased awareness

Sheeran's revelation has raised awareness about a disease which is frequently considered to be just a harmless skin infection. Healthcare specialists state that late diagnosis occurs because people do not recognize it in countries where adult vaccination knowledge is still low.

The situation emphasizes another issue – shingles affects not only elderly patients, but also younger individuals who can suffer from serious complications if the symptoms go unnoticed.
