Are ties back in fashion? That question quietly frames The Devil Wears Prada 2, a sequel that arrives with both anticipation and a fair bit of dread. Sequels, more often than not, lean too heavily on relevance, trying to modernise, to feel relatable, to justify their place in a changed cultural moment. It’s a trap this film is aware of, and to its credit, it doesn’t completely fall into it.

A full-circle return to Runway

The story reintroduces us to Andy Sachs, now an accomplished journalist, whose career takes an unexpected turn, bringing her back to Runway, this time as a features editor. It’s a full-circle moment that feels both indulgent and inevitable. Alongside her return, we’re reacquainted with the icy brilliance of Miranda Priestly, whose signature nonchalance remains as compelling as ever.

What stands out immediately is the film’s ability to retain the original flavour. The world of Runway feels familiar, almost comfortingly so, yet with a quiet awareness of change. The fashion itself reflects this duality: from embellished drama to sharp power suits and softer feminine silhouettes, the styling blends authority with grace. Every look feels intentional, serving both nostalgia and evolution.

Playing it safe, and owning it

The story itself, however, plays it safe. The central conflict follows a predictable trajectory, resolving in a way that feels standard rather than daring. Yet, there’s a certain reassurance in that restraint. Instead of overreaching with unnecessary experimentation, the film chooses coherence over chaos. It leans into nostalgia without being consumed by it, attempting to balance the old world with the demands of a more modern, self-aware audience.

Living under the shadow of legacy

And yet, it doesn’t fully escape the weight of its legacy. While it revisits familiar emotional beats and relationships, the depth doesn’t always match the original’s sharpness. Still, there’s a certain satisfaction in seeing loose ends tied up; what once felt like an ellipsis now finds a sense of completion.

Ultimately, The Devil Wears Prada 2 feels like a film made for a generation that grew up with the original. It doesn’t reinvent the story, nor does it try too hard to. Instead, it revisits, reinterprets, and gently resolves.

This one’s for the millennials – That's all.
