The Tamil Nadu state government has introduced a new online portal to facilitate internships for Foreign Medical Graduates. The online platform, which is handled by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research, allows applicants to view the list of available internship seats in government and private medical colleges, apply online, and download the allotment order without having to run from one office to another.
Online system to ease CRMI process
As per a report by The Hindu, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian said that the new online portal is designed to make the lives of FMGs easier in obtaining Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship seats. Previously, applicants had to personally go to the DME office in Chennai, search for the available seats on their own, and submit their applications within a tight deadline.
Foreign medical graduates are required to complete CRMI to obtain permanent registration with the Indian Medical Council. The new online platform is expected to increase transparency by listing the available seats and simplifying the allotment process.

Fee waiver and stipend support
The Health Minister also remembered that before this government came into power, FM students were required to pay a whopping ₹3 lakh to the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University to pursue internship training in the state. This requirement has since been waived by the government. Moreover, FMGs are now entitled to a monthly stipend of ₹25,000 during their internship.
The Tamil Nadu Medical Students Association, Foreign Wing, has welcomed the new development and thanked the Health Minister for fulfilling their demand to make the process online, particularly for students who come from far-off districts.
Appointment orders for COVID nurses
On a separate note, Mr Subramanian distributed appointment orders to 668 nurses who had worked during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the last batch of people who have received permanent employment.

Of these, 2,146 individuals had already received permanent employment as contract hires through the Medical Services Recruitment Board. The remaining 668 individuals received their appointment orders after their documents had been checked.
The Minister stated that since 2014, the government has been making temporary hires permanent through the recruitment board, with 5,825 contract nurses receiving permanent appointment orders under the current government.
