The Delhi High Court on Monday cleared a significant hurdle in the proposed Comptroller and Auditor General audit of power distribution companies operating in the national capital. By dismissing petitions challenging the exercise, the court has effectively opened the door for authorities to proceed with a long-debated examination of Delhi's electricity distribution network.
The decision marks a major development in the ongoing debate around transparency and accountability in Delhi's power sector. With the legal challenge out of the way, the Delhi administration can now move ahead with the audit process under the supervision of Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
The ruling also carries political significance, with the BJP-led Delhi government positioning it as a step towards safeguarding consumer interests.
Delhi government says consumers will benefit
According to The Tribune, Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood welcomed the High Court's order, describing it as a victory for electricity consumers.
He said the government had strongly defended the matter in court to ensure greater transparency in the functioning of power distribution companies.
According to Sood, the administration remains committed to protecting residents from unnecessary increases in electricity tariffs and ensuring accountability within the sector.
The minister also said that the audit process would now move forward in accordance with the court's directions.
The CAG audit has been a longstanding issue in Delhi's political landscape, with successive governments taking differing positions on the matter.

Political accusations resurface after verdict
According to The Tribune, following the ruling, Sood alleged that the opposition to the audit exposed a close relationship between the previous Aam Aadmi Party government and the discoms.
He claimed that resistance from the companies reflected a larger nexus that prevented financial scrutiny of the sector.
The AAP, however, has consistently rejected such allegations in the past and defended its management of Delhi's electricity system during its tenure in government.
The latest verdict is expected to intensify political exchanges between the BJP and AAP in the coming days.

What happens next?
According to The Tribune, the court's decision now enables the Lieutenant Governor's office and the Delhi government to initiate the procedural aspects of the audit.
While the detailed timeline has not yet been announced, officials are expected to coordinate with the Comptroller and Auditor General's office regarding the scope and implementation of the exercise.
Power distribution companies have not publicly reacted to the latest development.
The audit is likely to examine financial operations, expenditure patterns, subsidy utilisation and other aspects related to electricity distribution in Delhi.
