World Book Day 2026: Inside the world’s most beautiful libraries

World Book Day is celebrated annually by book lovers around the globe. It marks an appreciation for stories, knowledge, and the spaces that house them. Libraries, in particular, represent a meeting point of architecture, history, and literature.

From centuries-old monastic halls to futuristic contemporary structures, ten libraries stand out globally for their remarkable design and historical significance. They are located across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia.

Historic and baroque libraries

Trinity College Library in Dublin, Ireland, contains the Long Room, which holds over 200,000 ancient books and also houses the Book of Kells. Admont Abbey Library is known as one of the most beautiful monastic libraries in the world.

It has white-and-gold interiors, frescoed ceilings, and detailed sculptures. Strahov Monastery Library has the Theological Hall and Philosophical Hall.

It features painted ceilings, antique globes, and old manuscripts. Biblioteca Joanina is an 18th-century Baroque library. It has gilded woodwork, painted ceilings, and old leather-bound books, with bats used to protect books from insects.

Classical and architectural landmarks

George Peabody Library in Baltimore, United States, nicknamed the "Cathedral of Books," features five tiers of cast-iron balconies rising toward a skylight. Its symmetry and elegance have led it to be regarded as a visual masterpiece. The Library of Congress in Washington D.C., the largest library in the world, includes the Thomas Jefferson Building, which contains grand staircases, mosaics, murals, and a large reading room. The Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a neo-Manueline library featuring dark wood interiors, intricate carvings, and a stained-glass skylight. It feels like stepping into a regal 19th-century reading room.

Modern and futuristic libraries

Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a modern tribute to the ancient Library of Alexandria. It has a large slanted roof and big reading halls, mixing modern design with history. Stuttgart City Library is minimalist and futuristic with an all-white interior and cubic design. Its open layout creates a calm and almost unreal reading space. Tianjin Binhai Library features wave-like bookshelves and a spherical auditorium.
