India has earned a significant boost in its women’s football ambitions after being selected by FIFA as one of 12 nations for the Women’s Development Programme under the Commercial Strategy 2026. The inclusion follows a comprehensive proposal by the All India Football Federation, outlining India’s roadmap to strengthen the commercial and structural foundations of the women’s game. The programme, set to run online from May to October 2026, will deliver tailored guidance to stakeholders across the country.
Strengthening commercial foundations
The initiative is expected to play a transformative role in shaping the financial sustainability of women’s football in India. With AIFF now supported by a commercial partner, clubs will receive structured training in areas such as sponsorship acquisition, brand building, and fan engagement.

These components are crucial as the ecosystem moves toward professionalization, enabling clubs to develop long-term revenue models rather than relying solely on institutional support.
Preparing for licensing
The programme also aligns with upcoming regulatory changes from the Asian Football Confederation, which plans to introduce a women’s club licensing system. With Indian Women’s League clubs set to fall under these requirements, the capacity-building initiative becomes timely.
