India’s electric two-wheeler story is entering a new phase, and this time, motorcycles are beginning to take centre stage. Leading that shift is the Ola Roadster X, which has quickly established itself as a frontrunner in a segment that is still finding its footing.
Strong early lead in key markets
According to PTI, the Roadster X has secured more than half of electric motorcycle sales in major states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. These regions are crucial because motorcycles dominate the two-wheeler landscape there, making them central to the long-term success of electric mobility.
Monthly sales of electric bikes have now climbed close to 5,000 units, a sharp rise from just over 1,000 units a year ago. This steady growth suggests the category is moving beyond early adopters and inching toward mainstream acceptance.
Range improvements driving adoption
One of the biggest hurdles for electric motorcycles has been range anxiety. Unlike scooters, bikes are often used for longer daily commutes, especially in semi-urban and rural areas.
Ola appears to have addressed this concern with the higher-spec Ola Roadster X+, which claims a range of up to 400 to 500 kilometres on a single charge. This brings it closer to the expectations set by traditional petrol-powered bikes and makes it a more practical option for everyday use.
The use of the indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cell has also contributed to improving performance and consistency, helping build consumer confidence.

Competitive space still wide open
Despite Ola’s early dominance, the electric motorcycle market remains fragmented. Several manufacturers have announced plans to enter the segment, but most are still in the early stages of scaling production, distribution and service networks.
This has given first movers like Ola a significant advantage, especially in regions where a strong on-ground presence plays a decisive role in influencing buyers.

A shift beyond scooters
For years, electric scooters drove India’s EV transition. Now, motorcycles are beginning to shape the next wave of growth due to their wider relevance across different geographies and user needs. The rise of models like the Roadster X signals that the transition from internal combustion engines to electric power is no longer limited to urban commuting. If current trends continue, electric motorcycles could soon become a major pillar of India’s mobility future.
