Three days of a long weekend, but no travel plans in place? While heading to a faraway destination at the last moment may not be possible, that doesn’t mean the break has to be spent indoors. Several quiet and scenic spots close to the city offer ideal options for a relaxed day trip without the stress of long-distance travel.

You can leave in the morning, return by evening, and if the place grows on you, even stay back for the night. Here are three such nearby destinations where you can slow down, breathe in fresh air and soak in the calm of winter.

Beri Panchpota

Beri Panchpota is located about 11 kilometres from Gobardanga station in North 24 Parganas. The village sits on land once covered by the Ichamati river. Over time, as the river changed its course, a horseshoe-shaped lake was formed here. Today, the area is dotted with several lakes such as Dumor Baor, Baldeghata Baor, Jhaudanga Baor and Beri Baor. Bengal’s largest horseshoe-shaped lake is located here, with Bangladesh lying just across the water.

In winter, Beri Panchpota attracts picnickers looking for open space and quiet surroundings. Those who wish to stay overnight can do so, as homestays and guesthouses are available in the area.

Asannagar

Asannagar in Nadia district is slowly becoming a favourite among travellers who enjoy simple village landscapes. From Kolkata, it takes about four hours by road to reach here. One can also get down at Krishnanagar station and travel onward to Asannagar.

The village offers lush greenery and a peaceful environment. From here, visitors can explore places like Banbibi Tala, Shibnibas, the banks of the Churni river, Rajrajeshwar temple and the Putulpara whirlpool. However, accommodation options are limited, so planning ahead is advisable.
