The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League will begin on March 28, kicking off another highly anticipated edition of the world’s most popular franchise T20 tournament. The competition is scheduled to run for more than two months, with the final set to take place on May 31. With ten franchises competing and an expanded number of matches expected, IPL 2026 promises an action-packed schedule for cricket fans across the country.

Tournament window confirmed

The upcoming IPL season will run from March 28 to May 31, giving teams a little over two months to compete for the title. The league will continue with its 10-team format, where franchises battle through a long league stage before the top sides advance to the playoffs.

Reports suggest the tournament could feature up to 84 matches, marking an expansion compared to earlier seasons and further underlining the league’s rapid growth.

Opening match likely to feature defending champions

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru are expected to feature in the opening match of the tournament. Their home venue, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, is also likely to host key matches during the business end of the tournament, including major playoff fixtures and possibly the final.

Full schedule yet to be released

While the tournament window has been officially confirmed, the complete match schedule has not been released yet. The BCCI is expected to announce the detailed fixtures in phases. Factors such as logistical arrangements, venue availability, and security planning are believed to be influencing the finalisation of the schedule.
