Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2026 campaign began on a worrying note, as both result and injury concerns piled up during their clash against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane suffered a sudden injury in the second innings, adding to KKR’s troubles in an already tense contest. Just before the fifth over, Rahane clutched his leg and went down in visible pain, forcing a temporary halt in play. Despite briefly standing up with assistance, he eventually walked off the field, leaving a leadership void at a critical moment.

Rahane provides a positive update after the match

After the game, Rahane reassured fans and team management by confirming that the issue was due to severe calf cramps rather than a serious injury.

He expressed confidence in recovering quickly, offering relief for KKR ahead of their upcoming fixtures. His experience remains vital for the side, especially in high-pressure situations.

Rinku steps up as stand-in leader

With Rahane unavailable, vice-captain Rinku Singh took charge during a challenging phase. Though relatively new to leadership at the IPL level, Rinku was handed the responsibility of guiding the team as momentum began to slip. Manish Pandey came in as a substitute fielder, but Rahane’s absence was clearly felt on the field.

Strong batting display overshadowed by bowling struggles

Earlier, KKR had dominated with the bat, posting a formidable 220 runs. Rahane and Finn Allen laid a solid foundation, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh built on it through the middle overs. Half-centuries from Rahane and Raghuvanshi powered the team past the 200 mark.

However, the bowlers failed to defend the total. Mumbai’s openers Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton counterattacked with aggressive fifties, shifting the momentum early in the chase. KKR’s bowling unit, including Vaibhav Arora, Blessing Muzarabani, Kartik Tyagi, Varun Chakravarthy, and Sunil Narine, struggled for control, conceding runs at over 11 per over as the match slipped away.
