Dating app trap in Delhi: Man abducted, robbed of ₹7 lakh in Nehru Place; 5 arrested

A man was lured via a dating app, abducted and forced to transfer ₹7 lakh in Delhi; five accused have been arrested.

In a shocking incident, Delhi Police has arrested five people, including a woman, for allegedly abducting and robbing a man of around ₹7 lakh after luring him through a dating app.

According to The Times of India, the police mentioned that the victim was contacted by a woman using the profile name “Sherry” and was persuaded to meet her in Nehru Place. However, when he reached the location, he was confronted by three men linked to the woman. The accused allegedly assaulted him, forced him into a car and threatened him. Police said the victim was choked until he lost consciousness. During the ordeal, he was coerced into transferring approximately ₹7 lakh through UPI transactions. After the robbery, he was abandoned in the same area.

CCTV, digital trail help crack the case

A case was registered at Kalkaji Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including robbery and abduction for ransom. Investigators analysed CCTV footage and identified one of the vehicles used in the crime. The probe further relied on mobile data, call records, intelligence inputs, automatic number plate recognition systems and FASTag details to track the suspects. One accused, identified as a cab driver, was first arrested, leading police to the rest of the group. The remaining accused were later nabbed from Malviya Nagar. Police said the group included individuals from varied backgrounds, including a gym trainer and a student.

The case highlights the growing risks linked to online interactions and dating platforms. Authorities have urged people to exercise caution while meeting strangers and to verify identities before any in-person interaction, as cyber-enabled crimes continue to evolve in urban areas.
