The BCCI has barred players, support staff and match officials from using smart sunglasses in restricted IPL 2026 areas as part of its strengthened anti-corruption measures. The move comes after concerns that wearable devices with communication and recording capabilities could pose a threat to the integrity of the tournament.
Under the latest directive from the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU), smart sunglasses have been classified as communication and audio-video recording devices. Since these gadgets can connect to the internet, send messages, make calls and record footage, they are no longer permitted inside Players and Match Officials Areas (PMOA).
Why the ban was introduced
The ACSU has observed a growing trend of technology companies promoting smart eyewear among cricketers and support personnel. While these devices offer hands-free communication and recording features, cricket authorities fear they could be misused for unauthorized information sharing during matches.

Officials believe such gadgets present risks similar to smartphones and other connected wearables. To avoid any security loopholes, players and team staff have been instructed not to carry smart sunglasses into restricted zones on match days.
Part of wider IPL security measures
The ban is one of several steps taken by the BCCI to tighten security during IPL 2026. In recent weeks, franchises have also been reminded about stricter protocols concerning player access, hotel security, restricted areas and interactions with outsiders.
The board’s objective is to prevent corruption risks, information leaks and any activity that could compromise the fairness of the competition. Teams have been informed that violations of the latest guidelines may attract disciplinary action.
As wearable technology becomes more advanced, the BCCI is taking a proactive approach to ensure that the IPL remains secure and maintains its competitive integrity throughout the season.
