India’s decision to leave teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi out of the playing XI for the first T20I against Ireland came as a surprise to many fans. The 15-year-old, who earned his maiden senior call-up after a string of impressive performances, had been tipped to make his international debut. However, the team management opted for experience, indicating that Sooryavanshi’s opportunity will come at the right time.

Experience gets the nod

Ahead of the series opener in Belfast, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak explained that players who have consistently performed for the national team should not be dropped simply to fast-track a youngster’s debut. He stressed that competition for places is healthy, but established players deserve to retain their spots after delivering results.

As a result, India persisted with the opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. In the toss Shreyas Iyer explained the thinking behind not going with the 15-year-old boy, and said, “Unfortunately no (Sooryavanshi is not playing). He's a gun player but we have some tremendous players who have done well for us so we are backing them. He will get his chance when the time comes.”

Patience remains the key

Sooryavanshi has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past year, impressing in domestic cricket, age-group tournaments and the IPL with his fearless batting. His performances have made him one of the country’s most exciting young prospects.

The left-handed batter has also caught the attention of the coaching staff during training sessions in Ireland, further strengthening his case for selection. However, the management appears determined to ease him into international cricket instead of placing immediate expectations on his shoulders.

With more matches remaining on the Ireland tour and a demanding white-ball series against England to follow, Sooryavanshi is expected to receive opportunities soon. For now, India have prioritised continuity and experience, but the teenager’s omission is widely seen as a temporary delay rather than a setback to his international career.
