The upcoming edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to take place under unusual and challenging circumstances, as a ripple effect of the ongoing Middle East conflict and the resulting global oil crisis. With Pakistan facing fuel shortages and economic pressure, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been compelled to take swift and practical decisions to keep the tournament on track while aligning with national priorities.

In a major development, PSL 2026 matches will be conducted behind closed doors. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated that this decision has been taken to minimise fuel consumption and support the country’s broader energy conservation efforts. The board has left room for flexibility, indicating that fans could be allowed later if the situation improves. However, for now, public attendance remains suspended.

Reduced venues and cancelled opening ceremony

To further cut down on logistical demands, the PCB has restricted the tournament to just two cities, Lahore and Karachi, rather than multiple venues. This significantly reduces travel requirements for teams and officials. Additionally, the opening ceremony, typically a grand affair, has been scrapped as part of cost-cutting and resource-saving measures.

Oil crisis and geopolitical impact

The disruption stems from escalating tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, which have driven up global oil prices and strained supply chains. Pakistan, being heavily reliant on imported fuel, has felt the impact sharply, prompting the government to prioritise essential usage and limit non-critical activities.
