Missing out on India’s T20 World Cup squad might seem like a setback for Shubman Gill, but Cheteshwar Pujara believes it could actually work in his favour. The experienced batter feels this disappointment can push Gill to perform even better in IPL 2026.

Gill hasn’t been at his best in T20 internationals recently, which led to his exclusion. But moments like these often motivate top players to raise their game and Pujara is confident Gill can do exactly that.

Strong IPL can bring Gill back into T20 team

Pujara pointed out that Gill is a proven multi-format player. A good IPL season could quickly put him back in contention for India’s T20 side. Last season, Gill was one of the top performers for Gujarat Titans, scoring 650 runs in 15 matches at an average of 50.

If he delivers similar numbers again, selectors will definitely take notice. With leadership roles already in Tests and ODIs, Gill still remains a key figure in Indian cricket.

Strike rate is the biggest focus area

The only concern around Gill’s T20 game is his scoring speed. His strike rate of 155.87 last IPL was good, but not exceptional for a modern T20 opener. Pujara believes Gill needs to push that number closer to 160 to strengthen his chances of a comeback. Batting alongside players like Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler should give him the freedom to play more aggressively.

In simple terms, Gill has the talent, now it’s about adding more intent. IPL 2026 could be the perfect stage for his comeback story.
