Kolkata’s iconic bakery 'Nahoum & Sons' is set to reopen from Monday after remaining closed between March 18 and 22 due to what the management described as “unavoidable circumstances.” The temporary shutdown, which sparked concern among loyal customers, was reportedly caused by a combination of an LPG gas shortage and reduced staff availability during Eid.
Speaking on Saturday afternoon, shop manager Jagdish Haldar clarified the situation, expressing frustration over the attention the closure received.

“There is a gas crisis. But that's not everything. It's festival time now. Most of our artisans are Muslim. So during this time every year, the shop has very few products. How can we make things with so few staff? Besides, this year there's also a gas crisis. All things considered, we decided to close the shop. But the shop will reopen in a few days, that's also written in the notice. But even then, I don't understand why there's so much 'news' about it. The shop is closed on Saturdays anyway. And it will reopen from Monday,” Jagdish Haldar said.
Founded over 120 years ago, Nahoum and Sons at New Market has long been a trusted name for cakes and bakery items in Kolkata. The news of its closure left many residents worried, given the emotional connection Bengalis share with the establishment. Apart from the COVID-19 lockdown period, such a closure is rare in recent memory. The shop had previously shut briefly after the death of its owner, David Nahoum, in 2013.
Cherished legacy returns as Kolkata’s beloved 'Nahoum and Sons reopens
Known for its unique blend of traditional Jewish recipes and Kolkata’s local flavours, the bakery continues to attract crowds with its signature offerings such as plum cake, lemon tart, brownies and almond kisses. Despite changing times, Nahoum and Sons has preserved its legacy and remains an integral part of the city’s food culture.

However, the irritated Jagdish finally says one thing: "Are there no other cake shops in Kolkata? Why do I have to face so many questions?"
The vendors from nearby shops are equally surprised. Because they too have never seen this cake shop closed.
So whether it's due to fewer artisans during Eid or the LPG gas crisis, Kolkata residents are happy that 'Nahum and Sons' is opening on Monday.
