A young Ghanaian footballer was killed after armed robbers attacked his team bus late on Sunday night, sending shockwaves through the country’s sporting community. The incident took place as players were returning from an away fixture, turning what should have been a routine journey into a deadly encounter. Dominic Frimpong, who played for Berekum Chelsea FC, succumbed to gunshot injuries after the bus came under fire in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. He was 20.
Late night ambush leaves team in panic
According to the Ghana Football Association, the attack occurred around 10:30 pm along a road in the Nyinahin District. The club said masked men armed with guns and assault rifles intercepted the vehicle and opened fire. Players and staff were forced to flee into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire. Amid the chaos, Frimpong was struck by a bullet. He was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries. Police confirmed the incident, describing it as a violent robbery that resulted in both loss of life and theft. Another victim, a 52-year-old man, was reportedly robbed of cash during the attack.

Rising talent lost too soon
Frimpong had recently joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana Stars FC and was considered one of the promising young players in the league. He had already made 13 appearances this season and scored two goals. In its statement, the Ghana Football Association described his death as a tragic loss not just for his club but for the entire football community. The club also paid tribute, remembering him as a dedicated player whose passion reflected the spirit of the league.

Calls for security review
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of teams travelling for matches, especially on late night routes.
