Ahead of their crucial clash against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk, the biggest talking point in the Kolkata Knight Riders camp revolves around one name, Varun Chakravarthy. After missing recent games due to a finger injury, uncertainty loomed large over his availability, triggering concern within the squad and among fans.

Road to recovery gathers momentum

Varun’s injury occurred during a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad while attempting a catch, forcing him out of action. Since then, circumstances have further limited his appearances—the game against Punjab Kings was washed out, while he remained sidelined against Lucknow Super Giants.

However, the latest developments bring a sense of optimism. The mystery spinner has resumed training ahead of the CSK encounter and has been actively participating in practice sessions. Despite wearing a protective bandage, he has shown commitment and consistency in his preparation. Sources within the KKR camp indicate that Varun has not skipped a single session, signalling that he is match-ready and eager to return.

A key weapon for the Chepauk challenge

Varun’s potential return could be a major boost for KKR, especially considering his strong record against CSK. In 11 matches, he has picked up 13 wickets, showcasing his effectiveness against the Chennai-based side. His numbers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium are equally encouraging, with 8 wickets in 7 matches, conditions that typically assist spin bowling.

That said, the current season hasn’t been ideal for him so far. In two appearances, he has yet to claim a wicket and has been relatively expensive. Even so, his experience and ability to exploit turning tracks make him a crucial asset. KKR, still searching for their first win after four matches, will be hoping Varun’s comeback sparks a turnaround. Meanwhile, CSK enter the contest with renewed confidence following a victory over Delhi Capitals, setting up a high-stakes encounter at Chepauk.
