After earning critical acclaim for Shahorer Upokotha, inspired by the works of Badal Sircar, director Bappa returns with a deeply human story in Chhobiwala. This time, the narrative shifts from social decay to the intimate and painful realities of financial hardship and artistic isolation in contemporary life.

A story of an unseen artist

At the heart of Chhobiwala is Vishwakarma, played by Late Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, a photographer whose artistic vision remains unrecognised by society. Branded as incompetent, he struggles to find meaningful work and is largely confined to photographing the deceased, an occupation symbolic of his fading relevance. His creative spirit, however, refuses to die, even as the world around him dismisses his talent.

His wife Mala, portrayed by Debleena Dutta, becomes the emotional anchor of the story. Working in a factory to sustain their household, she balances resilience with empathy, standing by her husband despite the crushing weight of poverty. Yet, Vishwakarma’s growing detachment pushes him deeper into an internal world of solitude.

A turning point of impossible choices

As the narrative unfolds, written by Shantanu Nath, the couple is confronted with circumstances that force them into making two profoundly difficult decisions. These choices test not only their relationship but also their moral and emotional boundaries. The film raises a compelling question: Can an artist truly preserve integrity while battling survival in today’s unforgiving world?

Strong creative backing and ensemble cast

Presented by Matchstick Motion Pictures and produced by A4J Films, the film boasts a talented ensemble including late Rahul Banerjee, Debleena Dutta, Sreelekha Mitra (Special Appearance), Shantanu Nath, Rana Basu Thakur, Rimi Deb, Khaled Mahmood Turjo, Arpan Bose, and Aradhana Jana.
