When I first sat down to watch Project Hail Mary, I expected a serious, hard science fiction film, the kind that asks to be measured against Interstellar or Gravity. That was my frame of mind going in. But the film had other plans.
A deeply human story about belief and resilience
At first, I will admit, I felt a little restless. The pacing seemed slow, and I was ready to dismiss it before it had really found its rhythm. But by the time the credits rolled, I had completely changed my mind. What stayed with me was not the science alone, but the feeling beneath it: hope.
That is what surprised me most. The makers are not just interested in technical ideas or big-screen spectacle. It is interested in belief, in purpose, and in the strange, stubborn way people keep going even when the odds are against them. In that sense, it felt less like a film about outer space and more like a film about the human spirit. It also made me think of Rocky.

No! Not because the two stories are alike in any literal sense.
The films remind us why we show up for the people we care about and why perseverance still matters. Sometimes the most powerful stories are not the ones that overwhelm us with scale. They are the ones that quietly remind us of something simple we may have forgotten.
Curiosity for all
The movie's ability to go beyond realism and allow for innocent curiosity was what I valued most about it. We frequently lose that natural curiosity as we get older. We develop caution, skepticism, and pragmatism. However, this movie asks us to temporarily set some of that aside.
It is not a film only for children. It is for all of us who could use a reminder that imagination is not something to outgrow. Sometimes, it is exactly what helps us move forward.
By the end, I came away with a small but lasting spark of belief. And in a world that often feels too heavy, that is no small thing.
