Manchester United are holding off on making a final decision regarding Michael Carrick’s future as manager, choosing to assess the situation at the end of the season despite a noticeable improvement in performances under his leadership. The club’s hierarchy, led by director of football Jason Wilcox, is keen to take a long-term view before committing to a permanent appointment, even as Carrick continues to strengthen his case with consistent results in the closing stages of the campaign.

Strong run under interim charge

Carrick has overseen a significant turnaround since stepping in following the departure of Ruben Amorim earlier this year. His record of eight wins from twelve matches has propelled United up the table and placed them firmly in contention for Champions League qualification. The team’s form during this period has been among the strongest in the Premier League, highlighting the stability he has brought after a turbulent start to the season.

Managerial options still open

Despite the positive momentum, United are continuing to evaluate alternative candidates before making a final call. Names such as Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann remain on the club’s radar, although both are currently tied to long-term contracts with national teams. This cautious approach reflects the club’s intent to avoid another short-term appointment and instead secure a manager capable of leading a sustained rebuild.

Transfer planning already underway

Even as uncertainty remains over the managerial position, planning for the next season has already begun. Carrick is understood to be involved in discussions around transfer targets and pre-season preparations, suggesting he retains the trust of the club’s leadership. Midfield reinforcements are a priority, with Aurelien Tchouameni among the players being considered as United look to strengthen the squad ahead of the new campaign.
