Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim, bringing an end to his 14-month spell at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese coach joined United from Sporting CP in November 2024 but leaves the club after Sundayâs 1-1 draw away to Leeds United. The result proved to be the final straw in a difficult period for the club.
After the match, Amorim hinted at problems behind the scenes. He suggested there was tension between him and the clubâs hierarchy, saying he was the âmanagerâ of Manchester United, not just the âcoach, a comment that pointed to a fractured working relationship.

Manchester United are currently sixth in the Premier League table and have won only three of their last 11 matches, a run of form that increased pressure on the manager. Despite the clubâs history as 13-time Premier League champions, results have once again fallen short of expectations.
Darren Fletcher to take over
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who is currently the clubâs Under-18 head coach, will take charge of the team for Wednesday nightâs Premier League match against Burnley.
The decision leaves INEOSâ football leadership with another major call to make. After a series of missteps, the club now faces yet another reset as it looks for stability at the top.

Amorim is not the only manager to lose his job on Monday. In Scotland, Celtic have parted ways with Wilfried Nancy following Saturdayâs 3-1 defeat to Rangers. Nancy managed just eight matches in charge, losing six of them.
West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo reacted to Amorimâs sacking during his pre-match press conference. âI am surprised. Sad. He is Portuguese. A young manager. But it is what it is. We all know this is how the industry works,â he said.
Another chapter closes at Old Trafford, and once again, Manchester United are left searching for answers.
