Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim as manager, bringing an end to his disorganised 14-month coaching. “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as head coach of Manchester United,” the Premier League club said in a statement on Monday.
Who is Darren Fletcher?
The former Red Devils midfielder, Darren Fletcher, is currently the under-18s head coach. He will be in the dugout for their next game against Burnley on Wednesday. The club mentioned, “With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly decided that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity for the highest possible Premier League finish.” The Scot spent more than 20 years at United as a player. He joined the club’s academy as an 11-year-old and went on to make 340 appearances for the club.
During his spell at Old Trafford, he won the Premier League title five times, one Champions League, one FA Cup, and two League Cups. He also played for West Brom and Stoke City, where he retired aged 34, with chronic illness having affected the latter half of his career.

Darren Fletcher now steps in to diagnose the club’s faltering charge for Champions League qualification this season. Though the club statement announcing Ruben Amorim’s departure only said Fletcher would take charge of the team for the next match, against Burnley, on Wednesday (January 7), the 41-year-old former Scotland international will likely be in charge till the end of the season, especially if results go his way.
