Goalkeeper Marc‑André ter Stegen recently found himself in an unusual situation during the presidential election of FC Barcelona after he was unable to cast his vote despite arriving at the polling station. The German international had reportedly intended to participate in the club’s democratic process, but an administrative issue prevented him from doing so.

Ter Stegen unable to vote despite arrival

Barcelona held its presidential election with members of the club, known as “socios,” voting to decide the leadership of the Catalan giants. Prominent candidates, including Joan Laporta and Victor Font, were contesting the election as thousands of members gathered to take part in the vote.

Ter Stegen also arrived at the polling station hoping to participate in the process. However, when election officials checked the official electoral register, his name could not be found on the list of eligible voters. Since only registered members whose names appear in the electoral census are allowed to vote, officials informed him that he would not be able to cast his ballot.

The goalkeeper reportedly waited as officials reviewed the records and checked whether the issue could be resolved. Despite these efforts, the problem could not be corrected at the venue, and Ter Stegen eventually had to leave without voting.

Administrative issue caused confusion

The issue was later linked to a technical or administrative problem involving the club’s membership records. While Barcelona players are typically granted membership status after joining the club, members must ensure their details are properly registered in the electoral list.

In Ter Stegen’s case, his membership information was reportedly missing or not updated in the official electoral census. Because of this discrepancy, election officials had to follow the rules and deny him the chance to vote.
