India’s T20 World Cup victory has sparked plenty of discussion around the players who made the biggest impact, and Ishan Kishan’s return to the national team has been one of the standout stories. After staying away from the Indian setup for nearly two and a half years, Kishan made a strong comeback and played a key role in the tournament.

Opening the innings, the left-handed batter provided India with explosive starts. His attacking approach in the powerplay helped the team gain early momentum in several matches and laid the platform for important wins. Kishan’s performances proved that the team management’s decision to bring him back into the squad paid off.

However, Kishan’s return also meant that wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, who had been a regular member of India’s T20 side for around a year and a half, had to miss out on the World Cup squad. His exclusion created a lot of debate among fans and experts when the squad was announced.

Team wanted a different opening strategy

India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav recently spoke about the decision during a PTI podcast. He admitted that leaving Jitesh out of the squad was not an easy call for the team management.

According to Suryakumar, the decision was influenced by both instinct and detailed data analysis. The team management was looking for a left-hand and right-hand opening combination and also wanted a more aggressive start with the bat. Kishan’s style of play suited that strategy.

Difficult decision but team balance mattered

Suryakumar also acknowledged that it would have been difficult for Jitesh to accept the decision, especially after playing regularly for the team in recent months. But the management had to make a tough choice based on what they felt was best for the team.

Another factor was flexibility in the batting order, as the team wanted the option of having two wicketkeeper-batters in the lineup if needed. In the end, the selectors placed their trust in Kishan, and the young opener delivered with strong performances during the World Cup.
