The National Basketball Association has mapped out a clear and structured timeline for the 2026 postseason, running from mid-April to mid-June with distinct competitive phases.
Play-In sets the stage, playoffs begin
The action begins with the NBA Play-In Tournament, scheduled from April 14 to April 17. Teams ranked 7th to 10th in each conference compete for the final two playoff spots, adding a high-pressure gateway into the postseason.

The main NBA Playoffs then tip off on April 18 with the first round. Sixteen teams, eight from each conference, enter a best-of-seven elimination format, where higher seeds enjoy home-court advantage. This opening phase quickly establishes momentum, with early wins often shaping deeper runs.
Race to the Finals and championship decider
The Conference Semifinals follow in early May, typically between May 2 and May 4, reducing the field to eight teams. Strategy, squad depth, and consistency become increasingly critical at this stage. The Conference Finals are expected to begin around May 19 (Eastern Conference) and May 20 (Western Conference), deciding the two finalists. These series often deliver the most intense contests, with a place in the championship round at stake.

The season culminates with the NBA Finals starting June 3. The two conference champions clash in a best-of-seven series to determine the league winner. If required, a Game 7 is scheduled for June 19.
Overall, the playoffs span roughly two months, progressing from a broad contention pool—including Play-In teams—to crowning a single champion, maintaining the league’s competitive and high-stakes format.
