Days after the controversial IPL 2026 incident involving Kolkata Knight Riders batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi, the Marylebone Cricket Club stepped in with an official clarification supporting the umpires’ call.

MCC explained that Raghuvanshi had initially begun his run on the off-side of the wicket before moving across the pitch toward the leg-side while the throw was travelling toward the stumps. According to the club, that movement constituted a deliberate change in direction and therefore met the criteria of a “wilful act” under the laws governing obstructing the field.

The London-based body clarified that a batter who unnecessarily changes running lines, especially by crossing the pitch, risks being judged as intentionally blocking a throw.

Why was Raghuvanshi given out

The MCC statement emphasised that Raghuvanshi’s dismissal was not because the ball merely struck him, but because his route while running was considered avoidable. “Had he stayed off the pitch, remaining on the offside, the ball would not have hit him,” MCC explained in its clarification. The club further noted that if Raghuvanshi had consistently run on the leg-side from the start, the incident would likely have been treated as accidental obstruction, and he would have remained not out.

Instead, MCC argued that his crossing from one side to the other directly placed him in the throw’s path.

Rare dismissal sparks debate

Obstructing the field remains one of cricket’s rarest and most debated modes of dismissal. The incident quickly divided fans, commentators and former cricketers, with many questioning whether Raghuvanshi intentionally interfered with the throw. However, MCC’s intervention now gives the umpires’ decision official legal backing and could influence how similar situations are interpreted in future matches.

The clarification is also expected to become an important reference point for players regarding running lines between wickets and awareness during run-out attempts.

Bigger impact on IPL conversations

This incident has added another layer of controversy and discussion to IPL 2026, a season already packed with dramatic finishes and heated debates over umpiring decisions.

For Kolkata Knight Riders, the dismissal proved costly during a crucial phase of the innings. At the same time, for cricket lawmakers, the moment became an opportunity to reinforce the technical interpretation of one of the game’s lesser-seen laws.
