.South Korea is making a renewed bid to host Formula One, more than a decade after its previous association with the sport ended. The city of Incheon has emerged as the focal point of this revival plan, with authorities aiming to reintroduce the country to the F1 calendar in the coming years.

He stated that the city is “aiming to stage the first race in 2028,” underlining the administration’s long-term commitment to bringing the high-profile motorsport event back to South Korea. The announcement signals a serious intent backed by planning at the municipal level.
Lessons from past challenges
South Korea previously hosted F1 races at the Korea International Circuit between 2010 and 2013. However, the event was discontinued due to financial losses, logistical concerns, and limited spectator turnout. Officials now appear determined to avoid repeating those mistakes by choosing a more accessible and commercially viable location.
Incheon’s urban circuit vision
Unlike the earlier remote circuit, the proposed plan focuses on a street or city-based circuit in Incheon, which is well-connected and close to the capital region. Authorities believe this urban setting can significantly improve fan engagement, international visibility, and logistical efficiency. The city’s infrastructure and proximity to major transport hubs are seen as key advantages.
Blending motorsport with K-culture appeal
A major highlight of the proposal is combining Formula One with South Korea’s globally popular cultural wave. Mayor Yoo emphasised that the event could be linked with “K-culture,” suggesting concerts, performances, and entertainment experiences alongside the race weekend. Officials also indicated that such initiatives would help boost tourism and enhance Incheon’s global cultural profile.

The proposed return of Formula One is not just about sport but also about economic and cultural impact. Authorities expect the event to draw international visitors, generate revenue, and strengthen South Korea’s standing as a global destination for major events. If successful, the move could mark a significant comeback for the country in elite motorsport.
