Who was Jennifer Paes?
Jennifer Paes was a former Indian basketball player who played a significant role in the growth of women’s basketball in the country. Born in Kolkata, she represented India at the international level during a time when women’s sports received very limited attention and support. Through her performances and dedication, she became one of the respected names in Indian basketball.
Jennifer later captained the Indian women’s basketball team in 1982 and inspired many young athletes to take up the sport. Her contribution went beyond the court, as she became part of one of India’s most celebrated sporting families.
She was married to Vece Paes, who was a member of India’s bronze medal-winning hockey team at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Their son, Leander Paes, went on to become one of India’s greatest tennis stars, winning multiple Grand Slam titles and an Olympic bronze medal.
