Artificial intelligence is redefining the way political campaigns are designed and delivered in India, marking a clear shift from traditional outreach methods to highly targeted digital strategies. Across multiple states, parties are investing in dedicated AI teams and tools that allow them to generate content, customise messaging and engage voters with unprecedented speed. What was once an experimental addition has now become central to campaign planning, changing not only how leaders communicate but also how voters consume political messaging.

Campaigns become faster, sharper and hyper local

Political parties such as Bharatiya Janata Party are increasingly relying on AI driven systems to streamline campaign operations. From generating speeches and videos to translating messages into regional languages, the technology is helping leaders connect with diverse audiences without being physically present. Tools powered by advances in Artificial Intelligence are also solving practical challenges, such as avoiding repeated use of stock visuals and enabling the creation of unique campaign material tailored to specific regions or communities. The result is a more immersive and personalised voter experience.

Deepfakes and misinformation raise concerns

While AI offers clear advantages, it also introduces risks that are becoming harder to ignore. Leaders like Priyank Kharge have warned about the growing use of manipulated content, especially targeting lesser known candidates who may lack the resources to counter false narratives. Concerns have also been echoed by figures such as P Rajeeve, who highlighted the potential misuse of voice cloning technologies. Instances flagged by Shashi Tharoor underline how deepfake videos can blur the line between authentic and fabricated communication, particularly for audiences less familiar with digital manipulation.

Regulation struggles to keep up with rapid change

The Election Commission of India has introduced guidelines requiring political parties to clearly label AI generated content. However, enforcement remains uneven, with many synthetic videos and messages circulating without disclosure. This gap between regulation and practice has made it increasingly difficult for voters to distinguish between genuine and altered content, raising questions about transparency and accountability in digital campaigning.

Balancing innovation with responsibility

Despite the challenges, political stakeholders agree that AI will remain a permanent fixture in India’s electoral landscape. Parties such as Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have emphasised the need for responsible usage, focusing on transparency and ethical safeguards. As campaigns continue to evolve, the focus is shifting towards finding a balance between innovation and integrity. AI is no longer just a supporting tool in elections, it is becoming a defining factor that shapes how political narratives are created, distributed and contested.
