Central Railway has expanded its freight operations with the launch of automobile loading services from the Igatpuri Goods Shed, marking a significant step in strengthening rail-based logistics for the automotive sector. The initiative is expected to enhance connectivity for manufacturers in the Nashik industrial belt while offering a more efficient alternative to road transport.
A new hub for automobile logistics
The service began with an inaugural consignment booked by Transport Corporation of India, reflecting early industry confidence in the facility. Around 100 vehicles were transported using specially designed New Modified Goods wagons, which are built to ensure safe handling and efficient movement of automobiles. The shipment, sourced from the Mahindra & Mahindra plant in Nashik, was dispatched to a goods terminal under the North Eastern Railway network.
The introduction of Igatpuri as a loading point creates a strategic advantage for manufacturers in the region. It reduces dependence on distant freight hubs and allows quicker turnaround for shipments, helping streamline operations.

Efficiency gains for industry
The move is expected to lower logistics costs and improve supply chain reliability for automobile companies. Rail transport offers higher capacity and predictable transit times, making it an attractive option for bulk vehicle movement. The revenue potential is also notable, with each rake projected to generate substantial earnings for the railway network.
For manufacturers, the benefits extend beyond cost savings. Faster evacuation of finished vehicles from factories can ease inventory pressure and support smoother distribution across markets.

Sustainability and long-term strategy
The initiative aligns with broader efforts by Indian Railways to diversify its freight portfolio and attract high-value cargo. Automobile transportation by rail also contributes to environmental goals by reducing carbon emissions and easing congestion on highways.
Central Railway’s push into end-to-end logistics solutions signals a shift in approach, where railways are positioning themselves as integrated partners for industry rather than just transport providers. The development at Igatpuri highlights how targeted infrastructure upgrades can unlock new efficiencies for both the rail network and the manufacturing sector.
