Google is preparing to bring its Gemini artificial intelligence assistant to cars equipped with Google built-in, marking a major shift in how drivers interact with their vehicles. The company is replacing the older Google Assistant with Gemini, a newer AI system designed to understand natural conversations, manage more complex requests, and help users complete tasks more smoothly while on the road.
The move is expected to make voice controls more practical for everyday driving, especially for people who rely on navigation, messaging, music, and quick information while commuting. The rollout is starting in English in the United States, with support for more countries and languages expected later.
A more natural way to talk while driving
One of the biggest changes with Gemini is how it understands speech. Traditional voice assistants often require short and specific commands. Gemini is built to handle everyday language, allowing users to speak more naturally.
This means drivers may no longer need to repeat commands or use exact phrases. Instead of saying a basic instruction, users can conversationally ask detailed questions. They can also ask follow-up questions without restarting the request each time.
For example, a driver searching for food on a trip could ask for a well-rated restaurant along the route, then continue by asking whether it has vegetarian options, outdoor seating, or easy parking nearby.
Smarter navigation and trip planning
Navigation is expected to become one of Gemini’s strongest features inside vehicles. Google Maps already plays a central role in many cars with Google built in, and Gemini could make route planning faster and easier.

Better help with messages and calls
Gemini is also expected to improve how drivers manage communication while keeping their hands on the wheel. It can help read incoming messages, summarise long texts, and draft replies through voice commands.
Instead of reaching for a phone, users may be able to respond by speaking naturally, then adjust or approve the message before sending it. This hands-free approach could reduce distractions and make communication safer while driving.
