KTM is gearing up for a major overhaul of its RC lineup, with the next-generation models expected to arrive in 2027. The confirmation came from Bajaj Auto, which partners with KTM in India and plays a key role in product development and manufacturing. While specific technical details remain under wraps, the long timeline suggests that this will be more than just a routine update, potentially marking a significant shift in KTM’s sportbike strategy.

Twin-cylinder platform in the works

One of the biggest talking points is the possibility of KTM moving away from its long-standing single-cylinder setup. The current KTM RC 390 is powered by a 373cc engine, but reports indicate that a new twin-cylinder platform is being developed.

This new engine is expected to sit below the 500cc mark and could eventually underpin multiple KTM models, including the RC, Duke and Adventure range. Such a move would allow KTM to bridge the performance gap between its entry-level and mid-capacity motorcycles while offering smoother power delivery and improved refinement.

Design evolution expected

The next-generation RC is also likely to receive notable design upgrades. Expected highlights include sharper styling, LED lighting elements and aerodynamic additions like winglets, aligning the bike more closely with global supersport trends. Spy shots of related development models suggest that KTM is working on a broader platform overhaul, not just limited to the RC series.

Current RC 390 to continue

Despite the upcoming changes, the existing RC 390 is not going anywhere anytime soon. It is expected to continue with its proven 373cc engine for the foreseeable future, ensuring KTM maintains a strong presence in the entry-level performance segment.

Impact of GST and future lineup strategy

Industry developments such as GST 2.0 are also influencing KTM and Bajaj’s strategy. Manufacturers are expected to introduce more sub-350cc motorcycles to benefit from lower tax brackets. This means KTM could operate across two parallel platforms: a smaller, more affordable range and a more powerful twin-cylinder lineup above it.

What lies ahead

With a new engine platform under development and a clear push towards diversification, KTM’s next-generation RC range could redefine its position in the performance motorcycle segment. While 2027 may seem some distance away, the groundwork being laid now points to a more refined, powerful and globally competitive lineup in the years ahead.
