WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users in India to complete prepaid mobile recharges directly within the app. The rollout is currently underway for both Android and iOS users and is expected to expand to all users in the coming weeks.

The update marks another step in WhatsApp's efforts to integrate everyday services into its platform, going beyond its core messaging function.

Recharge without leaving the app

The new feature enables users to recharge their own numbers or those of others without switching apps. It supports prepaid connections from major telecom providers, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

Users can explore available plans, choose one that suits their needs, and complete the transaction within a few steps. Payment options include UPI, debit cards, and credit cards. The feature is powered by PayU.

New ₹ icon for quick access

To make navigation easier, WhatsApp has added a dedicated ₹ icon on the home screen. This acts as a central hub for financial services within the app.

From here, users can access prepaid recharge options, make UPI payments, use Metro ticketing services, or send money directly in chats. The addition is designed to bring multiple services under a single interface for convenience.

How the feature works

Using the recharge service is a straightforward process. After tapping on the ₹ icon, users can select the prepaid recharge option, enter or choose a number, confirm the operator, and browse plans.

They can then pick a preferred recharge plan, select a payment method, and complete the transaction after reviewing the details.

Expanding digital services

The prepaid recharge option adds to WhatsApp's growing list of services in India, which already includes bill payments, metro ticket booking, and access to certain government services through chat.

With this addition, WhatsApp continues to position itself as a multi-purpose platform that combines communication with everyday digital transactions.
