Google marked International Women’s Day 2026 with a special doodle on March 8, highlighting the work of women whose contributions shaped fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The artwork focuses on women whose discoveries and inventions helped transform modern science. In a note about the doodle, Google said it honours the achievements of women whose work continues to influence generations of scientists and innovators.

"From stargazers to ocean navigators, women-led discoveries and inventions helped build the foundation of our modern world," the company said while introducing the doodle. The tribute also recognises the influence of these pioneers on young girls who aspire to pursue careers in science and technology.

Scientists who changed the course of modern research

Several historic figures are closely associated with the legacy of women in STEM.

Marie Curie, the physicist and chemist who discovered radioactivity, became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. Her research later contributed to advances in cancer treatment.

Ada Lovelace, a mathematician from the 19th century, is widely regarded as the world’s first computer programmer for her work on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine.

Katherine Johnson, a mathematician at NASA, played a key role in calculating flight trajectories that helped make the Apollo missions possible. Rosalind Franklin, a chemist and crystallographer, produced crucial research that helped scientists understand the structure of DNA.

Mae Jemison, an engineer and astronaut, became the first African American woman to travel to space when she flew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992.

Voices of women across the world

For this year’s doodle, Google invited more than 300 women from 13 cities across five continents to complete the sentence: “One day I will…”

Their responses were used to shape the message of the artwork, reflecting hopes and ambitions shared by women and girls around the world. Google’s doodles have frequently recognised influential women in science, civil rights, journalism, sports and the arts. The 2026 edition also highlights the possibilities ahead for future innovators.

History and theme of International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is observed every year on March 8 to recognise women’s achievements and draw attention to issues related to equality and empowerment.

The movement began with labour protests in Europe and North America during the early 20th century. The first International Women’s Day was observed on March 19, 1911.

The date later shifted to March 8, partly linked to events surrounding the 1917 Russian Revolution. The United Nations formally recognised the day in 1975. The theme for International Women’s Day 2026 is “Give To Gain,” encouraging support for women through mentorship, education and shared opportunities.
