Meta Platforms has introduced a new “incognito” mode for WhatsApp users to improve privacy during conversations with its AI chatbot, Meta AI. The update has been launched to address growing concerns about how personal data is used in artificial intelligence interactions. With this feature, users can now have more secure and temporary chats without worrying about long-term data storage.
The feature comes at a time when AI chatbots are being widely used for personal, financial and work-related questions. Meta says the new mode is designed to give users more control over their private conversations while also maintaining safety standards on the platform.

What is WhatsApp incognito mode
Meta has launched a new “incognito” mode for WhatsApp users to improve privacy during conversations with its AI chatbot, Meta AI. This major update is aimed at addressing long-standing concerns about sharing sensitive information in artificial intelligence interactions and creating a more secure experience for users.
The new incognito chat mode allows private and temporary conversations with Meta AI, which has already been integrated into WhatsApp for several years. According to Meta, messages in this mode are processed in a secure system that even the company cannot access. Importantly, these chats are not saved by default and automatically disappear once the user ends the session.
Why did Meta introduce this feature
Meta stated that the incognito chats were introduced because users often ask sensitive questions to chatbots, including private financial, personal, health, or work-related information. Will Cathcart, who is the head of WhatsApp at Meta, said that users should not feel forced to share sensitive information with companies that run AI systems. He highlighted that people often discuss private details with chatbots, but they should always have control over what they choose to share.
Beyond privacy concerns, the incognito chat mode also includes safety features to stop the chatbot from responding to harmful or unsafe topics.
Cathcart explained that the AI will guide users towards helpful information, when possible, refuse inappropriate questions, and may stop the interaction entirely if needed. This is aimed at ensuring a safer and more responsible experience for users while interacting with Meta AI.
How are AI companies addressing growing privacy concerns in chatbots
Generative AI systems have faced continuous concerns about privacy since they were first introduced. The large language models used in these technologies are trained on huge datasets, which may sometimes include personal information that users unintentionally share during chats with AI systems. This has raised serious questions about data security, user control, and possible misuse of sensitive information.

Meta’s new privacy-focused step comes in line with similar efforts by other AI companies. Competing platforms like Google’s Gemini already allow users to turn off chat history and prevent their data from being used for training AI models. ChatGPT also provides similar options, showing that the industry is slowly moving towards giving users more control over their personal data and privacy in AI interactions.
What are the limitations of WhatsApp incognito mode
Currently, users in incognito mode can only ask text-based questions and receive text responses. This feature does not support uploading or generating images. Meta has also added an age verification requirement, and users under 13 are not allowed to access the platform, ensuring compliance with safety rules and age restrictions.
