On March 3, 2026, India shall witness one of the most spectacular events in the sky this year: a total lunar eclipse that occurs in the late afternoon and evening hours. Unlike other eclipses that occur after midnight hours, this one shall occur during the time when the Moon rises in the sky. People shall witness the end of the eclipse as the sun sets in the sky.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the total lunar eclipse shall occur on March 3, 2026, at 3:20 pm IST. The total phase shall last from 4:34 pm to 5:33 pm IST. The eclipse shall end at 6:48 pm IST. Since the Moon shall rise around the time the sun sets in India, people shall witness the end of the eclipse as the Moon rises in the sky.
Why does the 3/3 date feel symbolic?
The date 3/3 has a certain serenity to it. In spiritual philosophy, the number 3 is associated with balance and alignment: mind, body, and spirit. Also, in Hindu philosophy, the Trimurti or the three aspects of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva symbolise creation, sustenance, and destruction.

Step outside and watch the Moon rise
The easiest way to respect the evening is to show up. Take a walk outside and look at the changing colours of the sky. Look at the moon and watch the darkness move away. Stand still and breathe slowly. Take a moment to let things develop without hurrying them.
Turn your shower into a reset
Water rituals are often connected to eclipses. Don’t hurry to take a bath. Take a moment to slow down. As the water flows, think about washing away stress or thoughts that occurred throughout the day. This gives the body a message that it’s time to slow down.
Write what you are ready to release
Lunar eclipses are often about endings. Take a seat and write freely about anything that feels heavy or old. Some people choose to fold the paper and then burn it as a way of ending something.

Listen to calming mantras
Softly chanting or listening to “Om Namah Shivaya,” the Gayatri Mantra, or even a simple “Om” can help steady the breath and quiet the mind. The repetition naturally encourages slower breathing and a calmer rhythm.
Try a simple bay leaf ritual
Take a dried bay leaf and write a small message such as “I let go of my fears” or “I choose peace.” Then, safely burn the paper and let the ashes fall outside.
End the night with gratitude
Before going to sleep, think of three small things to be grateful for. Put a hand on the heart and breathe slowly. End the night without a screen, not with a glow.
