A Kochi-based startup has launched an unusual seasonal service for mango lovers across India. Through its platform called 'Rent A Tree', customers can lease a mango tree for one full season and receive all its mangoes at their doorstep.

The concept is simple but novel. Urban consumers pay a seasonal fee, pick a tree from an online listing, and farmers do the rest; from care to delivery.

How does the process work?

Customers log onto the platform and browse trees listed across orchards in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. They select a tree and pay a lease fee starting at ₹10,300 per season.

In return, the entire yield of that tree, up to 90 kilograms, gets packed and delivered home once the fruit ripens naturally. Farmers manage all orchard work including nurturing, harvesting and packing. The customer receives fresh produce without visiting the farm even once.

Varieties and reach

The orchards stock several well-known Indian varieties. These include Alphonso from Maharashtra and Banganapalli from Tamil Nadu, among others. Trees are spread across India's key mango-growing belts, giving customers a choice of region and variety.

Why it is gaining attention?

Urban Indians are increasingly curious about food origins. This service directly addresses that interest by connecting a specific buyer to a specific tree.

Reactions online have been enthusiastic. One user wrote, "Never in my life did I think 'I own a mango tree in Kerala' would be a flex from someone sitting in a Mumbai apartment."

While another observer noted the wider potential, "This is a brilliant example of how simple ideas can reconnect people with nature and agriculture. Urban consumers get access to fresh, seasonal produce while farmers or landowners get a steady income without worrying about market price fluctuations. Models like this could also help preserve local orchards and encourage sustainable farming. If scaled well, initiatives like Rent A Tree could reshape how we think about food ownership and farm-to-home supply chains."

Why mango is good for health?

The mango is known as the “king of fruits” for its taste and health benefits. It is a nutrient-rich fruit packed with vitamins A and C and antioxidants. These help boost immunity and protect the body from diseases.

Mango supports digestion due to its fiber and enzymes. It also promotes heart and eye health and helps keep the skin healthy. It is low in calories as well.
