A romantic proposal by a newly-commissioned Army officer has triggered an intense online debate, with several retired military veterans stepping forward to defend the young captain against criticism over protocol and security concerns.

Captain Bharat Bhardwaj proposed to his girlfriend, Arushi, shortly after a passing-out parade at the Combat Army Aviation Training School in Nashik, Maharashtra. Videos of the moment quickly went viral, showing the officer kneeling on the tarmac and presenting a ring while still in ceremonial uniform. The proposal received widespread praise on social media, though some users questioned whether it was appropriate for a serving military officer.

Proposal sparks online controversy

While many X users described the gesture as heartwarming, others raised concerns about military decorum and security. Some critics questioned the presence of Army equipment, including a helicopter visible in photographs shared online, while others argued that armed forces personnel should adhere to stricter standards of public conduct.

The debate intensified amid reports that the Army could seek an explanation from the officer regarding the viral social media posts surrounding the proposal.

Retired officers come out in support

Several retired senior officers have dismissed suggestions that the proposal amounted to a serious breach of security or discipline.

As per Hindustan Times report, retired Lieutenant General HS Panag said young officers should not be subjected to unnecessary scrutiny over personal moments. He argued that such situations were not uncommon during military service and should be handled with perspective rather than outrage.

Retired Colonel Sanjay Pande described the viral image as a positive representation of the Army and suggested it could even inspire recruitment efforts.

Per Hindustan Times, former Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Satish Dua also rejected claims that the images posed a security risk, noting that military equipment is frequently displayed during public outreach events and exhibitions.

ā€˜Youngster nahi karega, toh kaun’

One of the strongest defences came from retired Lieutenant General Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon, whose remarks quickly gained attention online.

Defending the young officer, Dhillon argued that if the nation expects soldiers to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country, they should not be criticised for expressing personal emotions. He dismissed the backlash as unnecessary fault-finding and urged people not to exaggerate the national security angle surrounding the proposal.

His comment, ā€œYoungster nahi karega, toh kaun,ā€ became one of the most widely shared reactions to the controversy.

Debate continues online

The incident continues to divide opinion on X.

While supporters view the proposal as a touching personal moment between two people, critics maintain that military personnel should be held to stricter standards regarding public appearances and social media visibility. Discussions have also emerged around the growing influence of social media culture on traditionally conservative institutions.

For now, the viral proposal remains a talking point across the country, highlighting the intersection of military tradition, public perception and modern social media culture.
